Design Series 6: French Provincial

February 13, 2018

Lavish, luxe and loved. Three words to describe French provincial style which originated in the 1700’s. Originating as the style of the wealthy, think French country manor, it was emulated by the not so wealthy. The result is where the luxe and ornate intersects with organic, rustic charm.

Whether you want to add a few simple touches or take your French provincial styling all the way, here are some ideas for the 21st century.

•   Include a mix of neutral, muted colours, soft greys and white
•   Timber or tiled floors, tiled splash backs
•   Distressed, rustic furniture such as side boards, tables or free standing linen cupboards
•   Include organic fabrics such as cotton or linen.
•   Add touches of lace & ornate accessories including a chandelier and mirrors
•   Soft drapes and timber shutters

A large array of products from Sareen Stone’s range of natural stone and porcelains will fit into your French provincial style but we highlight 3 of our favourites below that will really set the tone for this design style:

Noce Travertine French Tumbled Tiles and Pavers

Nothing says quintessential rustic French style like our Noce Travertine French Tumbled tiles and pavers. Quite simply this beautiful stone will not disappoint, it’s beautiful to look at and to walk on. It can be used both inside and out and its versatility means it can be used for every room. Available in Jumbo French pattern too.

Timber lookalike porcelains - Rovere

If you want the look of timber but the ease of a tiled floor, then our timber lookalike porcelains including Timber Look Rovere and Timber Look Bianco, are the solution.

Handmade Spanish Subway Tiles

Handmade Spanish Subway tiles are perfect for French provincial styled kitchen and laundry splashbacks. They have a watermark glazing which provides a more authentic and rustic charm to the tile. The appearance of these tiles is less flat and they have a deeper glaze. More variation in colour tone is notable in the darker edges and lighter middle. As a result, each tile has an individual look rather than a machined and consistent straight edge which means they look great laid brick bond or herringbone.
